Title: Taking Black Our Culture
Medium: Plaster, Acrylic and spray paint
Year: 2018
Concept: This piece is an actual mold of my hand in the form of a Black Power Fist. This is cast in plaster and painted with the same African design on the cloth. The fist is grasping elements of black culture, holding African cloth and black hair. As it holds the African cloth and the black hair, this is a statement on taking back the aspects of cultural appropriation. People want to wear our hairstyles, people want to wear our clothes, emulate our features, and practice what’s not theirs, but this piece showcases that it’s ours and we are taking it back.

Title: The Slave
Year: 2018
Medium: Air Dry Clay, spray paint, chains, and wood.

Concept: This is a statement on slavery and the oppression that my people suffered for 400+ years. This figure has no eyes or mouth to represent how my ancestors didn’t have a voice and were constantly consumed by our oppressors. Chains consume the figure to represent how we were enslaved and that’s something that will always be apart of our history. The figure’s head is covered in red to represent the pain and suffering, slavery put us through.
